Former Guard on Guantanamo Torture

Here's a link to a two-and-a-half minute video interview from the BBC with a former US military prison guard at Guantanamo. Not that he reveals new information concerning our actions there, but it's always confirming to hear testimony from yet another witness.

Here is an interesting article mentioning that most prisoners released from Guantanamo have returned to terrorism.

Pentagon: 61 ex-Guantanamo inmates return to terrorism

True, but the Pentagon failed to confirm that these inmates actually had been terrorists in the first place. Most inmates are being held without just cause or valid, sufficient evidence.

Nevertheless, that doesn't justify our breaking international law. Guantanamo is in violation to human rights laws that we've signed and agreed to. Whenever habeas corpus is suspended by a government, serious questions ought to be asked concerning the legitimacy of that government's actions and motivations.

If I were released from Guantanamo, I'd turn back to terrorism too....but that's assuming I was a terrorist to begin with. One can't "turn back" to something one never did in the first place. Even if I were innocent to begin with, after spending 16 months at Gitmo, who knows how screwed up my brain would be. Suicide bombing hotels and weddings might make perfect sense to me after being tortured for 600 days.

Until these inmates are actually convicted, the Pentagon cannot truthfully say that they "turned back" to terrorism. That's just the Pentagon's (one very bloated government bureaucracy) sniveling rhetoric in order to temporarily justify their illegal actions (crimes against humanity or war crimes....take your pick).
