State of Emergency? The $170 Million Inauguration

Bush declared a State of Emergency because, "The move will allow the federal government to provide funding to District government agencies, which have been swamped with planning and paying for security and transportation needs."

I think that the Founding Fathers would vomit seeing what our government is doing. Declaring a State of Emergency was designed for disasters like Katrina not for disasters like unfunded parties.

Here is the article on Bush and here is an additional article showing what the total cost of the inauguration will be. It is sickening in my eyes especially when were are in the worst economic disaster since the great depression. I know that this inauguration is historic but when you are about to go bankrupt you don't go buy a yacht.

Why doesn't Obama come out and say we can't spend this much money? I know that if he did he would gain a lot of my respect and many many others for such a move.

Yes, pathetic. The Inauguration committee's justification is that many millions were donated specifically for parties and such. Donation sounds better than "taxpayer dollars". Of course, these donors are the type that wouldn't give a penny to charities but wouldn't blink another eye in giving millions to Obama.

I would have more respect for him too if he'd decline the money or give it all away to charity. But he is a politician after all. Politicians don't do that...if they did, they would lose their loyal donor support, which often comes with more than just money, but a deal, or at least implication of future favors.

Politics is all about favors, right?
