It was just revealed to me that our situation for getting off of foreign oil and lowering gas prices hasn't changed since 1977.

Nate, take a look at this paper by M. A. Adelman called, "The Real Oil Problem". I emailed it to everyone a few weeks ago but maybe you didn't see it.
The Real Oil Problem
One interesting quote from it:
"The real moral is this: It does not matter how much oil is produced domestically and how much is imported. Presidents may declare that there is an “urgent need” to cut imports and boost “energy independence” — no one ever lost political support by seeing evil and blaming foreigners. The facts are less dramatic. Imports do not make any importer “dependent” on any particular exporter, or even all of them taken together."
