For those that don't know what a filibuster is I will explain. I mentioned it in my Idaho Politics post, in that to maintain the ability to have a filibuster was important for balance.
A Filibuster is when Senators keep debate going on the floor on a bill to either shape legislation to be more effective and fair or it has been used a a tactic to block legislation from passing. It takes 3/5th of the senate (that's 60 votes) to end a filibuster and have a vote on legislation. This would be a supermajority.
With Obama as President and the House being a majority of democrats which don't have the filibuster it is only the Senate that could stop legislation from the left. Even though the Senate is a majority of Democrats if there is at least 59 and not 60 then the republicans could maintain a filibuster as a check and balance against a complete liberal agenda. This is why the Senatorial races in the nation are very important. Also, the congressional ones as well if the majority could switch back to the Republicans.
This article explains the importance of the filibuster and what could happen in legislative terms if the Democrats get a supermajority.
