Obama already being tested by Medvedev

Now that the world knows who our President will be as of Jan. 20th 2009, it appears that President Medvedev of Russia is not wasting time.

"President Medvedev ordered missiles to be stationed up against Nato’s borders yesterday to counter American plans to build a missile defence shield.

Speaking within hours of Barack Obama’s election, Mr Medvedev announced that Russia would base Iskander missiles in its Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad – the former German city – next to the border with Poland."

Even though he didn't mention Obama's name I think he is challenging Obama to see if he is strong against these kind of threats or if he will prove to be another Jimmy Carter. It is my opinion that he might not have announced this had McCain won but maybe he still would have.

I hope Obama will be able to stand up against Russia and other international threats and not be another Jimmy Carter.

Here is a thought.
It has been said that the Republicans have been stuck in a "Cold War" mentality ever since the end of the Cold War and this has caused us problems. Well with Russia's recent behavior could there be a resurgence of Cold War tactics? I think that it is possible, but I am not saying that it will be that way, in fact it won't be the same because of other international threats and factors such as Iran, Venezuela, China, India, and Brazil. But some aspects could be similar such as an arms race and matching military placements with some sort of retaliation as demonstrated here with Russia.

Obama faces so many major challenges to prove himself - to show he will be President he said he would be throughout the campaign - not a job I would want. But I hope it's a job he wants bad enough to put himself on the firing line every day for the next four years. An assigned reading in Hannah's class this week is an story with interesting facts about all our former presidents. Apparently John Quincy Adams didn't enjoy being the 6th President of the US from March 1825 to March 1829. From her book: " 'Make no mistake about it, the four most miserable years of my life were my four years in the presidency.' This pretty much sums up Adams' feelings about being president. He was a very bright man and had many great plans for the country. However his arrogance and independence made him one of the country's most unpopular presidents ever. When he ran for re-election in 1828, he was crushed by Andrew Jackson, 178 to 84." (Which begs the question, if he was so miserable, why did he run for re-election?) Hopefully Obama can keep his head on straight and go down in history as a great President. And by the way, if he can do that, it will be because he surrounds himself with people who have talents and skills he lacks, and who can do the best job for America in the role they've been assigned to. "Leadership is influence - nothing more, nothing less." (John Maxwell) The best leaders aren't good leaders because they know everything - they are good leaders because they know how to influence those around them.
